Day 15

What a great day today was!  The students were very sweet and surprised me after first break with a Happy Birthday Crown and many birthday cards and wishes! Such a wonderful class of students I am lucky to have!

We started a new 100 word chalenge today.  This week the students have to create a piece of writing the contains 5 words.
This weeks words are pepper crocodile, orange, soft and forgot.  I can't wait to read the stories the students come up with this week.  We are going to attempt to post them to the site this week and comment on other students writing from around the world.

We started our social studies unit on government today as well.  Students were given a picture to ponder. Many students inferred that this was a homeless person and we discussed reasons why they believe that.

In groups we brainstormed with our "Grade 5 knowledge of the world so far" and we came up with possible solutions to homelessness which are listed above.  We discussed further and realized that we need more information or background knowledge about homelessness before we can discuss possible solutions.  We will continue to learn about 5 "pressing problems" in Canada and how the government addresses these issues.
That's all for now.  I hope you are all enjoying the P.D. day together today.  Students were asked to work on their 100 word challenge at home today in their notebooks.
