Hello Parents!
I cant believe it's almost the end of November! This year is flying by.

Language Arts
Students have been busy the last 2 weeks finishing up their study of narratives by completing their Mr. men or Little Miss Books.  Look for them to come home in their bragging binder soon!  They will be sharing their with a few primary classes as well. We will be starting a book called Hana's Suitcase next week.  As this book is non fiction and describes on girl's struggle being Jewish during WWII your child may have many questions about that time.  Please know that the nature of our conversations will be at a grade 5 level and the book is written for the junior grades and is therefore "kid friendly".  I have read it in the past and the students always have such rich conversations surrounding it.
Science
They have also been finishing working through the centers about the human body systems.  They are now working in groups to become experts on one system and teach the class how it works through, models, visual aids and research.  Their group will present their work to the class in a couple of weeks. Look for a permission form for a workshop to introduce our next unit on Matter and Materials to come home soon.

Math
We have completed our unit on place value.  Students had a quiz on Monday that was marked and should have come home to be signed on Tuesday.  Please be sure to ask your child for their test results.
We will be moving onto our data management unit.  Students will be learning about various graphs and how to collect and analyze data.
For practice your child can go to www.lionktolearning.com and choose math then choose data management and probability.  Students should focus on the websites that are concerning data and graphing (rather than the probability sites).

Social Studies
We continue to look at local government and are moving into provincial government over the next week.
Everything else....
Our genius hour projects are coming along nicely!  We have students creating models, sewing clothes, creating websites, learning origami and so much more! I can't wait to see the final projects! :) I have dropped off the posters for the Remembrance Day poster contest.  Thank you to all the parents that signed permission forms for their child's poster to be included.  There were so many great artistic posters done.
Progress Reports will be sent home mid Dec.  It was nice to meet with many of you during interviews.  Once the reports come home, if you have further questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at the school.
Please check your students agenda each night.  They are to write their homework in the agenda and I sign my initial each day.  This will help you know what their work is that is due.
Also feel free to follow our class Twitter account @MrsCookesFab5s so you can check up on what were doing!
That's all for now.  Take care!

Hello Parents,
I am happy to be back online and keeping touch! Students have been working well this term asand nd learning a lot.  Here is where we are working on and what we are moving towards in our various subject areas.

Math-students have completed their work on patterning and have moved onto learning about place value to numbers in the hundred thousands. Students must be able to represent a 6 digit number in various ways. For example :
432 145 (standard form)
four hundred thirty two thousand one hundred forty-five (words)
400 000 + 30 000+ 2000+100+40+5 (expanded form)
Where we are headed....
Students are also learning decimals to hundredths. For example 54.3 or 54.32.  Students are now learning to place numbers on a number line and will be moving towards learning to round numbers to the nearest ones,  tens, hundreds, thousands and ten thousands.  This will lead to adding and subtracting of large numbers.

Ways to help...
check out this website for some math games to play with your child

Language Arts
We have been learning about the elements of a narrative story.  We have been working on answering questions effectively including supporting our answers.  After reading many books from the Mr. Men series, we have begun writing our own Mr Men or Little Miss stories.  We have completed our organizer and have begun our rough copies.  We will be publishing our books in the near future.
Where we are heading
We will begin reading a book called Hana's Suitcase soon as a class and have discussions around this book.  It is a non fiction  book about a child's experience during World War 2.  There will be a lot of rich discussions during the reading of this book.
Science
Students are working through centers on the Human Body.  Each centre is focussed on one of the 6 body systems. (Ask your child to tell you what the systems are called) Students will then be choosing a focus and preparing a project about a body system and a disease that can harm it.
Social Studies
Students have begun learning about local government and how decisions are made at the local level.  They had to choose a side about a fictious skate park going in beside our school and had a small debate about it.  They then wrote a letter to our mayor about what they think should happen and why. We will move on to learn about the provincial and federal levels and look at how 3 levels work together to help solve problems.

Remembrance Day
Students will be practicing for our Remembrance Day assembly next week.  The assembly will be on   Wednesday at 10:00 am in our gym. Parents are welcomed to join us.  The assembly is put on solely by the grade 5 students.
Students are entering a poster contest surrounding Remembrance Day.  I will be taking these posters to the Brampton Legion and they will be entered in a contest to win a prize.

Progress Reports and Interviews
Information regarding these 2 topics will be sent home early next week.  Please check your child's agenda each night for any information.

That's a quick update for now! Hope this updates you on what we've been doing lately in class.  Please always feel free to contact me should you have any questions or concerns!
