Hello Parents!
Welcome back to a new school year. I am sorry this has taken a bit for my first post but the first couple weeks have been hectic! This blog will be used to communicate updates now and then about what we are working on in our classroom. I will send you an email with a link to the new blog post so that you can hopefully read it from your phones or tablets at your convenience. Feel free to leave comments on our posts but just know that all parents who access this can read the comments so anything of a personal nature is best discussed directly with me. :) Please note that I usually attach photos with the posts but we have not received back all photo permission forms yet.
Getting to know you!
The first two weeks have been getting to know your students through various activities. It has also been working on building our classroom community. I believe in building a student led classroom. This means that the students have a lot of responsibility in how the classroom is run. Please ask you child what types of things we are doing in class to reinforce this idea. (ask about the morning greeter, afternoon closer and REARJMKL and Gimme 5s to start ) So far the students are embracing this idea and working very hard to help build a class community.
The students participated in various team building activities. They had to make a monster called a grebigol out of art supplies without talking! then they had to stack cups into pyramids using only string and elastics. They did fantastic at both activities!
Language
We have been reading a series of books about bullying called WEIRD, TOUGH and DARE its the same story told in three perspectives. We had some great discussions about bullying and the students wrote a reflection about who they identified with in the story. Students have done their first 2 blog posts on the blog site www.writeabout.com Ask them to show you their posts!
Math
We have begun patterning in class and students have done a partner math activity and some individual activities. We also have been practicing our multiplication tables at home so that we can master them and be able to use them for many math strands this year.
Homework
We will not have a set homework plan. The students will often have to post to the blog for homework as well as finish up classroom work. I encourage them to read each night for 20 mins or more and to go on the blog to do some writing. Also they can practice math skills on various websites such as www.mathisfun.com in the evenings. Any major projects or homework will be posted on the blog to update you.
Agenda
Check your students agenda each night to know what is expected of them for the next day. This could be reminders or homework or finish up work.
Science and Social Studies will start next week. Students will have me for Social Studies and Mrs.Jamieson for Science. We will begin with Canadian Government in Science they will be learning about The Human Body.
That's all for now if you have any questions, concerns or comments feel free to contact me at the school.
Have a great weekend!
Mrs. L Cooke :)
